How to Incorporate Tile into Your Small Bathroom

Adding tiles to the small bathroom can be one of the best ways of adding functionality and beauty to the room. Adding tiles will make any small bathroom bigger and brighter and even more pleasing while using the same functionality as a durable, water-resistant, and easy-to-clean surface. Depending on the material, colors, patterns, or the techniques used during installation, adding tiles is a sure way of transforming your small bathroom into a beautiful and efficient haven.    1. Choose a suitable tile size for your small bathroom

Choosing the right size of tile can really do the trick in small space. When we think of a small bathroom, people believe that smaller tiles are more ideally used in this kind of bathroom. On the other hand, larger tiles can actually lend to creating a sense of open space. Why?

   Large Format Tiles:

Tiles that measure 12×24 inches or larger can make a bathroom look even more spacious because there are fewer grout lines, creating a seamless look. This reduces visual clutter that may occupy part of the room in a bigger way, giving it a clean and uncluttered feel. Large tiles further become very effective for flooring and shower walls where you can have a continuous, streamlined surface.

Subway tiles Classic subway tiles, usually 3 inches by 6 inches, are another great option. Installing them horizontally will make the bathroom seem wider because these tiles appear to stretch the walls lengthwise. For a fresh twist, install subway tiles vertically or in a herringbone pattern for added visual interest.

Smaller Mosaic Tiles: Another application is a smaller mosaic tile; these might be used accentually- perhaps in niches in the shower, backsplashes, or borders. The texture will add interest to the space, focusing attention on specific areas without overwhelming the room.

2. Pick Soothing, Neutral Shades

Color is one of the very important illusions of space. In a bathroom, light and neutral tones can make the area feel more open and airy.

White and Light Grays: White tile is a great choice for small bathrooms because they create the illusion that the bathroom is brighter and larger. Light grays and beiges are a great choice also; they are warm without closing in the area.

You can either apply monochromatic schemes, or you can use the same color in different shades, to create strong color continuity. High contrast between walls, floors, and ceilings makes it difficult for visual boundaries; that is, nothing is holding the eye from roaming around the space.

3. Use Patterns Wisely

Patterns can add character and style to a small bathroom, but they need to be used thoughtfully to avoid overwhelming the space.

  • Horizontal Patterns: Horizontal lines or patterns on walls can visually widen the room. For instance, using horizontal stripes of tiles or opting for long, rectangular tiles installed horizontally will make the room feel wider than it actually is.
  • Vertical Patterns: Vertical lines or patterns can make a bathroom appear taller, which is helpful if your bathroom has a low ceiling. You could run vertical rows of tiles on one wall to create a sense of height.

Accent Walls and Feature Areas: Use bold patterns or bright colors sparingly as accents rather than covering the entire space. An accent wall behind the vanity or a patterned tile inside the shower can add interest without shrinking the room.
